Este trabajo —pensado originariamente como una conferencia— presenta un conjunto de conceptos y argumentos filosóficos que construyen una defensa del valor intrínseco, y no meramente instrumental, que puede hallarse en el castigo y en el derecho penal que lo institucionaliza. Conecta el análisis de la noción de castigo de Joel Feinberg y la concepción de la responsabilidad de Peter Strawson con una versión de un argumento de Igor Primoratz. Sitúa esa clase de defensa del valor del castigo en relación con posiciones antipunitivistas radicales y responde a la objeción liberal tradicional según la cual las justificaciones del castigo basadas en ideas de justicia retributiva implicarían un compromiso con la aplicación del castigo por rasgos del carácter.
